Cyprus Earthquakes: Villages Erased, Buildings Deadly

Cyprus Faces Seismic Risks: Urgent Need for Conscious Urban Planning and Controlled Construction
The President of the Presidential Earthquake Committee, Dr. Cavit Atalar, emphasized the ongoing seismic risks in Cyprus and the importance of conscious urban planning and controlled construction. Atalar highlighted the fact that throughout history, major earthquakes have impacted Cyprus, leading to devastating consequences. He stated, “Earthquakes do not kill, buildings do.”
Additionally, Prof. Dr. Cavit Atalar, Head of the Near East University Earthquake and Soil Research and Evaluation Center, emphasized the active tectonic movements in the region where Cyprus is located. To ensure the construction of safe cities, Atalar stressed the importance of conducting thorough ground surveys, implementing controlled construction measures, and raising public awareness about earthquake preparedness.
Recounting the historical earthquakes in Cyprus, Atalar mentioned the complete destruction of the settlement in Khirocitia in 550 and the loss of life caused by the 1953 BAF earthquake, which wiped out 9 villages from the map. Landslides were identified as a major contributing factor to the destruction.
Pointing out the unique geological characteristics of Cyprus, Atalar warned about the risks posed by swollen clay, stream deposits, landslides, and loose floors in coastal areas. He also highlighted the historical instances of tsunamis triggered by earthquakes in the region, emphasizing the need for strengthened inspection mechanisms and building control systems.
Atalar called for the establishment of a common audit unit within municipalities to enhance construction oversight. He urged for the inspection of existing structures, particularly pre-1960 buildings, and the development of strengthening projects to mitigate risks. Atalar also advised against building settlements in areas with high geological instability, such as Santorini, due to unpredictable tectonic movements.
The Presidential Earthquake Committee, formed in December 2021, continues its work with a team of scientists and experts. Atalar emphasized the importance of public awareness and the necessity of conducting detailed risk assessments for buildings. He reiterated the significance of conscious city planning and structural analyses, stating, “Earthquakes do not kill, buildings kill buildings.”
