Cyprus Talks: Is It Possible to Agree on a Just Solution for All on the Island?
The Cyprus problem is an issue that has been going on for years and needs to be resolved. Two separate communities on the island, the Turks and the Greeks, decided to establish the Republic of Cyprus in 1960, after long-standing problems. However, since this decision and the process after it did not provide justice for both sides, the problems continued and have come to this day.
Today, the Cyprus problem is still not resolved. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which includes the Turks, and the Southern Cyprus, where the Greeks reside, currently exist as two separate states. Moreover, the Cyprus problem is seriously followed not only by the two sides, but also by other countries in the region and the international community.
In recent years, the search for a solution to the Cyprus problem has gained momentum again. However, the meetings held to solve the problem did not yield any results. A concrete solution could not be obtained from the meetings held in Geneva in 2017. All these developments and increasing tensions indicate that the Cyprus problem is still not resolved and that there are still serious problems.
It can be a difficult task for the parties involved in the Cyprus problem to come together and agree on a just solution. However, it is essential that the parties listen to each other, understand and make fair decisions. The different views and demands put forward by both sides are an important obstacle in the solution process.
The solution of the Cyprus problem can be addressed in three main areas. These; land, property and security issues. In all three issues, a solution must be found that both parties agree to. The land issue is the most fundamental issue that causes the division of the island. It is essential that the parties agree on a plan in which the island will be divided fairly for both sides.
The property issue is another important issue that needs to be resolved. In particular, a solution must be found regarding the houses and properties that the Turks living in the north of the island were forced to leave after the 1974 intervention. This is an issue that both sides have been trying to solve for many years. However, no conclusion has yet been reached.
Security is one of the most critical issues. The parties need to find a solution with a common plan to agree on the security of the island. Before reaching a solution on the island, the parties must follow a common strategy in this regard.
In short, the Cyprus problem is one of the most difficult and complex issues to resolve. However, it is possible to reach a fair solution when the parties listen and understand each other. It is possible to advance the solution process and ensure peace in Cyprus by taking a joint decision on three fundamental issues. However, the parties need to take steps in this regard and display a conciliatory attitude.
