Daily Supply of 6 Million Cubic Meters of Natural Gas to Syria

Turkey’s Efforts to Provide Natural Gas and Electricity to Syria

Minister Bayraktar Announces New Initiatives

In a recent interview with CNN Türk, Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, outlined significant plans for supplying natural gas to Syria, aimed at reviving the nation’s electricity production. The initiative is expected to contribute to stabilizing life in Syria, which has faced ongoing challenges due to years of conflict.

Natural Gas Pipeline Infrastructure Underway

Bayraktar highlighted that construction work on the natural gas pipeline infrastructure on the Syrian side has already commenced. The gas supply will be sent to Aleppo via Kilis, with an initial flow of approximately 6 million cubic meters dedicated to fueling a natural gas power plant in Aleppo. This project envisions the commencement of gas flow within three months, paving the way for increased electricity production in the region.

Electricity Supply and Future Goals

In addition to natural gas, Bayraktar mentioned ongoing efforts to elevate electricity supply to Aleppo, noting that around 200 megawatts of electricity are currently being supplied from Turkey. He confirmed that all necessary permits for this electricity exchange have been successfully secured.

A Vision for Normalization in Syria

Bayraktar stressed that the normalization of life in Syria remains one of Turkey’s foremost priorities. The prolonged conflict has severely damaged the country’s infrastructure, and restoring energy resources is a critical element in rebuilding its economy.

The Need for Resource Restoration

During a bilateral meeting with Syria’s new Energy Minister, Bayraktar was informed that the country requires approximately 10,000 megawatts of power, while currently being able to generate only 1,700 megawatts. The Minister observed a generator at nearly every residence in Syria, underscoring the urgent need for restoring and utilizing the nation’s resources—be it gas or other minerals—to meet the population’s needs effectively.

As Turkey moves forward with these initiatives, the focus remains on leveraging sustainable energy resources to facilitate the recovery and normalization of life in Syria.
