Darıca Mayor Vows Justice for City’s Troubles

Gas Explosion Causes Chaos in Kocaeli’s Darıca District
A devastating series of events unfolded in Kocaeli’s Darıca district on Saturday, December 28, leaving many residents in despair. It all started when a work machine operator, without proper authorization, accidentally pierced a pipe containing a natural gas line while excavating the ground on Burak Reis Street in Bayramoğlu District. This resulted in a massive gush of natural gas, reaching heights of approximately 30 meters. As a safety measure, natural gas company teams had to cut off the gas flow to more than half of the neighborhoods in the district, causing widespread inconvenience.
While repair work was underway, tragedy struck when an explosion occurred in the ground floor flat of a 4-storey building in Abdi İpekçi District, approximately 4.5 kilometers away from the initial incident. Subsequent explosions in neighboring areas further exacerbated the situation, leaving a trail of destruction and injuries in their wake.
Following the explosions, the gas flow was completely cut off in the district and neighboring areas. This forced citizens to seek alternative means of heating, resulting in an overload in the electricity supply. Unfortunately, this led to a fire in a transformer, injuring two electricity distribution company technicians who were working to address the issue.
In the aftermath of these incidents, Darıca Municipality held a council meeting to address the crisis. Mayor Muzaffer Bıyık expressed deep regret over the situation, acknowledging the immense impact it had on the community. He emphasized that the primary responsibility lay with the operator’s error, which caused suffering to over 230,000 people in the city.
As repair efforts continue and affected residents struggle to cope with the aftermath, Mayor Bıyık reassured the public that the municipality is committed to holding those responsible to account. He vowed to pursue legal action and ensure that those who caused the disaster face the consequences of their actions. Plans are also underway to address the ongoing challenges faced by residents, including ensuring access to essential services and support.
The events in Darıca serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures and responsible conduct in all aspects of work. The community must come together to support those affected and work towards preventing similar incidents in the future.
