Dávid Vitézy Supports Validity of Recount for Invalid Votes
The recount of invalid votes cast in the Budapest mayoral election has sparked controversy and kept citizens on edge. After a meticulous and justified recount, incumbent mayor Gergely Karácsony emerged as the winner, defeating his contender Dávid Vitézy by a mere 41 votes.
In Sunday’s election, Karácsony received 371,466 votes while Vitézy trailed closely behind with 371,142 votes. Vitézy appealed against the initial results, citing a high number of invalid votes, prompting the election committee NVB to order a recount.
The National Election Office conducted a thorough recount of valid votes that were previously deemed invalid, and scrutinized each vote with multiple markings. The final tally saw Karácsony gaining an additional 112 votes and Vitézy securing 395 more votes, solidifying Karácsony’s victory.
In a gracious response, Vitézy thanked the election office for their efforts and congratulated Karácsony on his win. However, Vitézy raised concerns about the counting process, hinting at the possibility of further recounts in the future.
Despite Karácsony’s win in the recount, Vitézy remains steadfast in his stance and is prepared to face any challenges ahead. He has appealed against the election results in two districts, alleging deliberate misleading of voters in those areas.
