De Sutter Calls on Re-elected von der Leyen to Uphold Palestinian Commitment
Petra De Sutter, a prominent figure in the European political scene, has once again taken to social media to voice her concerns regarding the situation in the Middle East. Specifically, De Sutter shared a post on a social media platform regarding the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as the President of the EU Commission for a second term.
In her post, De Sutter reminded von der Leyen of her previous commitments to increasing humanitarian aid and support to the Palestinian Authority. De Sutter emphasized the importance of taking action against Israel and called for sanctions in response to the ongoing violence in the region.
“Despite the international call for a ceasefire, many Palestinians have been killed. Ceasefire now,” De Sutter urged in her post. This is not the first time De Sutter has shown her support for Palestine, as she has previously advocated for recognizing Palestine within the Federal Parliament.
Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen, who was nominated by the EPP and recommended to the European Parliament by EU leaders, has been elected for a second term as the President of the EU Commission. With a vote of confidence from the General Assembly, von der Leyen will continue to lead the EU Commission for another five years.
The sealed envelope voting method saw 401 MPs vote in favor of von der Leyen’s re-election, with 284 MPs voting against and 15 abstaining. Von der Leyen’s re-election comes at a crucial time as the EU faces various challenges both internally and on the global stage.
