Deadly Prison Break: Over 129 Fatalities in Congo

A tragic escape attempt at the Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, has resulted in the loss of at least 129 lives. The incident, which occurred earlier today, saw a stampede break out as prisoners tried to flee the overcrowded facility.
Interior Minister Jacquemin Shaban confirmed that 24 prisoners were shot dead by authorities using “warning” shots during the escape attempt. Additionally, 59 individuals have been injured and are receiving treatment, with reports of rape emerging from the chaotic scene.
Deputy Justice Minister Mbemba Kabuya revealed that the escape attempt was orchestrated by inmates within the prison. The situation has since been brought under control by the government.
Makala Central Prison, the largest in the country with a capacity of 1,500, currently houses a staggering number of 12,000 prisoners, many of whom are awaiting trial. This overcrowding has led to security challenges and previous escape incidents.
Amnesty International’s latest report highlights the dire conditions within the prison system in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2017, a similar incident occurred where individuals managed to escape after an attack by a religious sect. The government is now facing scrutiny over its ability to maintain order and safety within its correctional facilities.
