Severe Flooding in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul State Claims Dozens of Lives
Heavy rainfall in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil has led to devastating consequences, including loss of life and property. According to a statement from the state Civil Defense, the death toll has risen to 56 while 67 people remain missing. Additionally, 74 individuals have been injured and taken to hospitals, with ongoing search and rescue efforts.
Local media reports indicate that 377,497 people have been adversely affected by the flooding, with 281 towns sustaining serious damage. In response to the crisis, Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite declared a state of disaster for a period of 180 days, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the situation.
President Luiz Inaico Lula da Silva visited the affected region and pledged full government support to the province. He assured that all necessary resources would be provided to aid in recovery efforts and repair the extensive damage caused by the floods.
