MECC Condemns Depiction of “The Last Supper” at 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony
The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) has released a written statement expressing their disappointment and astonishment at the portrayal of the painting “The Last Supper” featuring Jesus, with a “drag queen” performance during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The statement emphasized that the mockery of the sacred mysteries of Christianity, which are revered by billions of people worldwide, is unacceptable. MECC highlighted that while freedom, diversity, and creativity are important values, they should not be used to disrespect the beliefs of others.

The statement asserted that such behavior on an international platform signifies a regression in global human-civilization rapprochement.
MECC called for a clear and sincere apology from those responsible for the disrespectful portrayal, urging them to acknowledge the hurt feelings and mockery of the sanctities of people around the world. Respecting the freedoms of others, protecting human dignity, and fostering healthy relationships among people require rectifying the mistake made at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
