MÁV’s First Vectron Electric Locomotive Enters Service, CEO Announces
The State transport company, MÁV, has welcomed its first Vectron electric locomotive into service, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of their fleet. CEO Zsolt Hegyi announced the news, emphasizing the company’s commitment to ensuring that every second MÁV locomotive will be updated to meet current standards by summer 2026.
In a recent Facebook post, Zsolt Hegyi shared, “Following the technical inspection and foil coating, we have put our Vectron electric locomotive into service.” The locomotive has already begun operating on the Budapest-Miskolc-Sátoraljaújhely line in northern Hungary, with plans for five additional locomotives to be introduced across the country soon. These modern vehicles are expected to enhance the efficiency and reliability of MÁV’s locomotive fleet, ultimately improving the overall passenger experience.
Describing the fleet renewal program as the largest in the past 30 years, Zsolt Hegyi highlighted the significance of this initiative for Hungarian railways. He affirmed, “This is the largest number of locomotives to have arrived on Hungarian railways in a single year since the change of regime.” The CEO also outlined the company’s goal of modernizing every second locomotive by 2026, with a focus on ensuring that 90 percent of InterCity trains are pulled by these upgraded locomotives.
Minister of Construction and Transport, János Lázár, also shared the development on his Facebook page, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving public transport services. The recent addition of the first Astride locomotive on the Pécs side of the line further demonstrates the efforts to enhance the efficiency and quality of rail services in Hungary.
With plans to add 55 new locomotives to the fleet this year and the remainder in 2026, MÁV is set to introduce 40 electric locomotives and 15 heavy-duty diesel locomotives by the upcoming summer season. Minister János Lázár expressed confidence in the acquisition of modern locomotives from the European market, highlighting the positive impact these upgrades will have on the country’s railway network.
Overall, the introduction of new locomotives signifies a positive step towards enhancing the reliability and efficiency of Hungary’s rail transport system, ultimately benefiting both commuters and the broader public.
