Decline in Flamingo Numbers Due to Eye-Catching Wetland Guests – BRTK
Experts are urging for immediate action to protect wetlands in Cyprus after a significant decrease in the number of flamingos across the island. Flamingos, known for their distinctive features such as curved beaks, elegant legs, and pink tones, are annual visitors to Cyprus on their migration routes.
In Northern Cyprus, popular spots for flamingo sightings include the Haspolate Treatment Plant outdoor pools, Famagusta Fresh Water Lake, Yenişehir (Gülseren) wetlands, Glapsides, and Silver Beach. Meanwhile, in Southern Cyprus, flamingos are often spotted at Salt Lake and August wetland in Larnaka.
However, recent data from the Mid-Winter Count of Water Birds has raised concerns as the numbers of flamingos have been declining consistently. Various factors such as human activities, ongoing construction works at the Haspolat Facilities, and the impact of climate change have been attributed to this decrease.
Biologist Dr. Asuman Korukoğlu emphasized the importance of protecting wetlands as essential habitats for flamingos and other species. She highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of laws and regulations, as well as increased awareness and education regarding the preservation of these crucial ecosystems.
Collaborative efforts between conservation organizations, local communities, and municipalities are being encouraged to safeguard wetlands and ensure the survival of migratory birds like flamingos. By taking urgent action and implementing effective protection measures, experts hope to reverse the decline in flamingo numbers and secure the future of these unique and captivating birds in Cyprus.
