Decline in Support for Zionism Among Jewish-Americans, Says Journalist Gell
In a recent article published in The New Republic, titled “Has Zionism lost the debate?”, author Gell addresses the increasing anti-Zionist demonstrations in the USA and the growing participation in these protests. Gell, known for his previous article titled “Driving,” shared his insights on the current situation.
Referencing a survey by the think tank “Data for Progress” from November 5, 2023, Gell highlighted that over 60 percent of American voters support a ceasefire in Gaza. He also noted a decrease in support for Zionism in the USA, stating that more American Jews are openly identifying as anti-Zionist than ever before, while those who still consider themselves Zionists are questioning the strength of their commitment to the ideology.
Gell pointed out the generational conflicts within the Jewish American community, with younger Jews leaning towards anti-Zionism or disconnecting from Israel, while older generations maintain a deep connection, often stemming from the collective memory of the Holocaust.
When asked about the future of Zionism in America, Gell predicted that the decline in support would continue as long as a far-right nationalist government governs Israel. He emphasized that many American Jews cannot support an ethnic state that engages in war crimes and abuses in their name.
Regarding the current situation in Gaza, Gell highlighted differing opinions on its origins and the potential for change with the defeat of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He criticized Israel for its discriminatory practices based on ethnicity, religion, gender, or class.
In response to the declining support for Zionism, Gell mentioned the tactics used by the Israel lobby in the USA, labeling any criticism of Zionism as anti-Semitic. He referenced the ideology of Ze’ev Jabotinsky, the founder of Revisionist Zionism, who advocated for applying pressure without apologies and waiting for change to occur.
Gell connected Jabotinsky’s ideology to the policies of Netanyahu’s Likud party, noting the continued resistance of Palestinians for self-determination despite Israel’s actions. He concluded by analyzing the detrimental effects of such ideologies on Israel’s current policies and practices.
