Decline of the UN’s Global Influence: BRTK Perspective

Public Party Chairman Prof. Dr. Kudret Özersay recently shared his thoughts on the Cyprus contacts of UN Deputy Secretary General Rosemary Dicarlo during an interview with BRT. Özersay highlighted Dicarlo’s meeting with former negotiators as a useful step in the ongoing discussions.
Despite the continued disagreement between the parties involved, Özersay expressed his belief that the UN Secretary-General may find it challenging to dedicate significant time to the Cyprus issue. He mentioned the possibility of the Secretary-General appointing a special representative at a later stage to oversee the negotiations.
In light of these developments, Özersay stressed the importance of caution on the part of the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey. He emphasized the need for clear guidelines regarding the powers and responsibilities of any appointed representative to ensure a constructive negotiation process.
Furthermore, Özersay acknowledged the shifting dynamics in international politics, noting the increasing influence of the United States in diplomatic initiatives. He highlighted the changing role of the UN in global affairs and the need to adapt to these evolving circumstances.
As discussions on a comprehensive solution in Cyprus continue, Özersay pointed out the emerging regional cooperation efforts involving Turkey, Israel, and the United States. He underscored the importance of observing these collaborations and the potential for new approaches to international relations in the region.
In conclusion, Özersay emphasized the need for flexibility and adaptability in navigating the complex dynamics of international diplomacy, particularly in the context of ongoing negotiations in Cyprus. The upcoming UN meeting in March will serve as a crucial juncture in shaping the future direction of the Cyprus peace process.
