Decrease in Fuel Consumption Over First Nine Months

Demand for Premium Fuels Increases in Hungary

In the first three quarters of this year, the Hungarian Petroleum Association (MÁSZ) reported a 0.8 percent increase in petrol consumption and a 1.2 percent decrease in diesel consumption in retail sales compared to the same period last year. Overall fuel consumption fell by an average of 0.4 percent during this time.

According to data from MÁSZ member companies, a total of 2.92 billion liters of fuel were consumed in Hungary between January and September, with 1.16 billion liters of petrol and 1.75 billion liters of diesel being filled into vehicles.

One notable trend highlighted by the association is the growing demand for premium fuels. In the first three quarters of the year, 207.4 million liters of premium petrol were consumed, marking a significant 14.0 percent increase from the same period last year. Additionally, consumption of premium diesel saw a 17.6 percent growth, with 147.1 million liters being consumed.

On the other hand, consumption of non-premium petrol and diesel experienced slight declines compared to the previous year. Motorists used 954.7 million liters of 95 petrol, which was 1.6 percent less than in the same period last year. Sales of non-premium diesel amounted to 1.61 billion liters, reflecting a 2.6 percent decrease.

MÁSZ member companies, which operate around 1,050 petrol stations in Hungary, contributed significantly to the total retail petrol sales and diesel sales in the country. Approximately 75 percent of petrol and 66 percent of diesel were sold by MÁSZ members.

In other news, fuel prices are currently on a downward trend, with the wholesale price of diesel dropping by HUF 5 gross from Saturday. The price of petrol, on the other hand, will remain unchanged for the rest of the week. As of now, the average price of petrol is HUF 605 (EUR 1.51), while diesel is priced at HUF 606 (EUR 1.51) per liter.

This data indicates a clear shift towards premium fuels in Hungary, with consumers showing an increasing preference for higher-quality options in the market.
