Denktaş: More Than Just a Leader
The Ankara University of Social Sciences (ASBU) recently organized the Rauf R. Denktaş Panel and Photography Exhibition to commemorate the 101st anniversary of his birth. The event was attended by President Ersin Tatar, Turkish Ambassador to Nicosia Yasin Ekrem Serim, as well as ASBU Academic and Administrative Staff.
The panel and exhibition took place at the Conference Hall of the Northern Cyprus Campus, under the auspices of the Embassy of Nicosia and in partnership with the Yunus Emre Institute. The event began with speeches from President Ersin Tatar, Turkish Ambassador Yasin Ekrem Serim, and panelists Prof. Dr. Ata Atun, Zeki Akçam, and Av. Murat Özad, who were all presented with certificates of appreciation.
Ambassador Yasin Ekrem Serim spoke about Rauf Raif Denktaş, highlighting his role as a leader who fought for the rights and independence of the Turkish Cypriot people. Serim emphasized Denktaş’s versatility as a statesman, lawyer, diplomat, intellectual, teacher, and artist, noting that he was a source of inspiration for the entire Turkish world.
President Ersin Tatar also addressed the audience, discussing Denktaş’s approach to the two-state solution and his unwavering commitment to the Turkish Cypriot cause. Tatar praised Denktaş’s leadership during the National Struggle and the 1974 Peace Operation, noting his sacrifices and dedication to the Turkish Cypriot people.
Tatar criticized the opposition’s willingness to give up the guarantee of the Republic of Turkey, emphasizing the importance of preserving Turkish Cypriot sovereignty. He reiterated the need for the TRNC to be part of any agreement concerning the region.
Overall, the event served as a tribute to Rauf Raif Denktaş and his legacy as a leader who fought tirelessly for the rights and independence of the Turkish Cypriot people. It also highlighted the ongoing importance of his principles and the two-state solution in the region.
