
Destructive Floods and Landslides in Trabzon Cost 208 Million Lira

The excessive rainfall that hit Trabzon on Friday, September 20, led to devastating floods and landslides in four districts of the province. The Trabzon Governorship released a statement detailing the impact of the natural disaster and the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.
According to the statement, a total of 339 emergency calls were received from various districts through the 112 Emergency Call Center and AFAD centers established by the district governorships. Immediate interventions were carried out by relevant institutions to address the emergencies, and all calls were successfully managed and closed.
The aftermath of the floods and landslides affected 39 neighborhoods in the districts of Araklı, Arsin, Sürmene, and Yomra. A total of 35 residences, 1 workplace, and 3 barns were evacuated, while damage assessment studies revealed the cost of damages to be 208 million 528 thousand 531 lira. Over 500,000 square meters of agricultural land, various agricultural products, machinery, cattle, and beehives belonging to local producers were severely impacted by the natural disaster.
Rescue and recovery operations are currently underway, with 639 personnel and 359 work machines deployed to clean up sediment and debris from affected areas. Additionally, repair works on roads, engineering structures, retaining walls, culverts, and other infrastructure are in progress to restore normalcy in the region.
The statement also mentioned that communication and energy supply issues have been resolved, ensuring that all subscribers have access to telephone and internet services, and no neighborhood is without electricity. The Turkish Red Crescent has provided essential supplies such as hot soups, meals, drinks, treats, and water bottles to those affected by the disaster.
Furthermore, the joint efforts of AFAD volunteers and individuals from ten provinces have been pivotal in supporting the cleanup and relief operations. Schools, mosques, and hospitals have been cleared of debris, and the relevant authorities are working tirelessly to mitigate the impacts of the landslides and floods in Trabzon.
Despite the challenges posed by the natural disaster, the solidarity and dedication of emergency responders and volunteers have been instrumental in helping the affected communities recover and rebuild in the wake of this tragedy.
