Detection of Non-recommended or Excess Plant Protection Products in 8 Samples

New Study Finds Plant Protection Product Contamination in Food Samples

In a recent study conducted by the Department of Agriculture between 6-12 October, alarming results have emerged regarding the presence of non-recommended or above-limit plant protection products in certain food items. Out of the sample products tested, 8 of them were found to contain these harmful substances.

According to the information provided by the Ministry, imported products were also not exempt from this issue. Among the 64 samples taken from imported goods, four of them were found to have exceeded the permissible levels of plant protection products.

The Ministry’s statement highlighted specific cases where the presence of over-limit plant protection products was detected. Orc Foods Ltd.’s apple, Mert Uluşan’s carrot, Corporal İşl.’s dill, and Bekir Cura’s pears were among the affected items. As a precautionary measure, these products are either being destroyed or returned to their place of origin.

In addition to imported goods, domestic products were also found to have residues of non-recommended plant protection products. Out of the 16 samples taken from domestically produced items, 4 of them were found to contain these harmful residues.

The study also shed light on specific cases of non-recommended plant protection product detection. Meryem Kil’s purslane and chard, Delire Ersöz’s chard, and Mücahit Rüstemoğlu’s pomegranate, all belonging to residents of Famagusta and Yayla village respectively, were found to have these contaminants. As a result, the affected products will be destroyed.

These findings raise concerns about the safety of food products available in the market. The presence of non-recommended or above-limit plant protection products in food can have detrimental effects on human health. It is crucial for regulatory authorities and consumers to be vigilant about the quality and safety of food items.

In order to address this issue, stricter regulations and monitoring measures need to be implemented to ensure the proper use of plant protection products in agriculture practices. Consumers are advised to choose organic and locally sourced produce whenever possible to minimize the risk of exposure to harmful substances.

The Department of Agriculture and relevant authorities are working towards improving the safety standards in the food industry and ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future. Regular testing and inspections will continue to be carried out to guarantee the quality and integrity of food products available to the public.

It is essential for consumers to stay informed and educated about food safety and make conscious choices to prioritize their well-being. By supporting sustainable and responsible agricultural practices, we can contribute to a healthier and safer food environment for everyone.
