Determining the Top Pálinka in the Country from 341 Submissions

The 11th National Pálinka and Törkölypálinka Competition, recently held in Budapest, has been highlighted by Agriculture Minister István Nagy as a significant event contributing to the promotion of Hungarian pálinka culture. In his remarks at the awards ceremony, Minister Nagy emphasized the importance of pálinka as a national treasure for Hungarians, praising the commitment of breweries, traders, and catering professionals in restoring pálinka’s reputation in the past 30 years.

The introduction of the Pálinka Act, the EU trademark obtained in 2004, and the protected designation of origin (PDO) obtained in 2011 have all played a role in enhancing the quality and reputation of pálinka. This year’s competition received 341 entries, with 286 receiving awards in categories such as gold, silver, and bronze. The prestigious title of Best Pálinka of Hungary 2024 was awarded to Brill Pálinkaház for their Vilmoskörte (Williams pear) pálinka.

Pálinka, a traditional fruit spirit with origins in the Carpathian Mountains, has a rich history in Hungary. Only fruit spirits produced in Hungary or certain regions in Austria can be called pálinka, with common ingredients including plums, apricots, apples, pears, and cherries. The strict regulations on the production of pálinka ensure its authenticity, distinguishing it from other spirit drinks or liqueurs.

Overall, the National Pálinka and Törkölypálinka Competition serves as a platform to celebrate and honor the craftsmanship and dedication of Hungarian distilleries, further solidifying pálinka’s position as a cherished national beverage.
