Date: June 17, 2023
Severe rainfall and hail in the village of Varlı, located in the Digor district of Kars, led to a flood that caused significant damage. The flood affected 10 houses in the village and resulted in the loss of numerous poultry.
Upon receiving a notification about the flood, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and gendarmerie teams were immediately deployed to the village. While the teams conducted damage assessments, villagers worked diligently to remove the rainwater using buckets after the heavy rain. Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident.
Kemal Cavlanlar, the Village Headman of Varlı, stated that the rainfall was excessive, causing the village to flood. He expressed relief that there were no casualties but pointed out that the creek was obstructed by fallen trees, requesting that it be cleared. The flood damaged 5 to 6 houses, resulting in the loss of livestock and straw. Access to some houses was restricted due to the darkness of the night, and Cavlanlar hoped to gather more information the following day.
AFAD and gendarmerie teams, after completing their necessary tasks in the flood-affected village, left the area. However, the region continues to experience intermittent rainy weather. Authorities have issued a warning to residents, emphasizing the need to remain cautious of potential floods and inundations.
The flood in Varlı village serves as a reminder of the devastating impact that extreme weather conditions can have on communities. It highlights the importance of preparedness and swift response measures to minimize the damage caused by such natural disasters.
