Discovering 15 Meltwater Spate Locations in Ulaanbaatar

The arrival of spring in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia has brought the yearly challenge of managing the meltwater spate and ice. This natural phenomenon is being managed by transporting ice from 15 locations in the city, including Sukhbaatar, Songinokhairkhan, Chingeltei, Bayanzurkh districts. The ice, which is being transported for a month, is being drawn from Selbe river, with a total of 21,340 tons of ice already transported.
What sets this operation apart is the involvement of a small number of workers who are breaking the ice with their bare hands, in addition to machinery. This method has been adopted to prevent flooding in the capital city. Normally, the workers are equipped with machinery to handle transportation of ice, but in this case, the use of bare hands has been necessary to execute the task within a short period.
The imagery from the operation is quite striking, showing rows of workers in protective gear breaking the massive chunks of ice with their hands, as the frigid water sprays around them. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of these individuals, who are doing their utmost to prevent potential flooding in Ulaanbaatar.
The transportation of ice from various locations in the city is essential for maintaining the safety and stability of Ulaanbaatar, especially during the spring thaw. The efforts of these workers, combined with the use of machinery, play a vital role in ensuring that the city is protected from the potential impact of the meltwater spate.
