Saudi Arabia is often perceived in various ways, but experiencing it firsthand offers a unique journey. From the deep respect for Arab and Islamic culture to the rapid development in Riyadh, the Saudi capital is an intriguing destination for travelers.
When announcing my trip to Saudi Arabia, my friends were curious about what the country had to offer to tourists. While it may seem distant, a closer look at its history, culture, and ambitious projects reveals a captivating travel spot.
At the heart of Saudi Arabia’s development is Vision 2030, a comprehensive reform program aimed at modernizing the economy, society, and reducing reliance on oil. Spearheaded by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the initiative focuses on economic diversification, social reforms, and infrastructure development, including investments in tourism.
Arriving in Riyadh from Budapest via Wizz Air’s direct flight, I was welcomed at King Khalid International Airport. The city’s impressive infrastructure, like the metro system, reflects Saudi Arabia’s forward-thinking approach to urban development.
Riyadh, with a population of 7.5 million, is the country’s largest city situated on the Najd Plateau. The city experiences scorching summers and mild winters, making December to February an ideal time to visit. Riyadh’s skyline boasts futuristic skyscrapers and ongoing construction projects, such as the anticipated world’s tallest tower.
Exploring Riyadh by metro, I was struck by the city’s modernity and efficiency. From the King Abdullah Financial District to historic sites like Diriyah, Riyadh offers a blend of old and new elements.
Boulevard City, a hub of entertainment and culture, showcases pavilions representing various countries and aims to become a global attraction. The city’s culinary scene offers an array of traditional dishes like kabsa and mandi, providing a taste of Saudi cuisine.
In terms of safety, Saudi Arabia’s strict enforcement of Islamic law contributes to its reputation as a secure country. Currency, internet access, and local SIM cards are essential aspects to consider for travelers.
Overall, my time in Riyadh left me impressed by the city’s blend of tradition and progress. With upcoming events like EXPO 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup, Riyadh is poised to become a prominent travel destination. For a unique cultural experience, the Saudi capital is a must-visit destination.
