Deadly Collapse of Isias Hotel Reveals Shocking Negligence
A recently released expert report has shed light on the devastating collapse of Isias Hotel in Kahramanmaraş during the earthquakes that rocked the region. The collapse tragically claimed the lives of 65 individuals, including 25 students who had traveled from Cyprus for a volleyball tournament.
According to the report compiled by Karadeniz Technical University, the 10-story building lacked any static calculation report or static project. Additionally, the construction of illegal floors without conducting proper ground surveys and the use of river sand in the building were also identified as major factors contributing to its collapse.
The earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaraş on February 6 resulted in significant destruction in Adıyaman, with Isias Hotel being one of the many buildings that succumbed to the tremors.
The expert report exposes the negligence leading to the tragic demise of Champion Melekler and numerous others who lost their lives within the shattered building.
The Isias Hotel bore witness to a tragedy that took the lives of 65 individuals. Among the victims were 25 students from a TRNC secondary school volleyball team who had arrived in the city for a tournament. Unfortunately, there were no survivors.
The report underscored the substandard quality of the concrete used in the construction, as well as the inadequately thin iron used, falling well below standard measurements.
Furthermore, it was discovered that no ground survey had been conducted for the building, and the use of river sand in its construction was in violation of regulations.
Aside from these irregularities, it was revealed that the building was originally designed as an apartment in 1991. However, it was later converted into a hotel once the necessary license was obtained.
The report also brought attention to the unauthorized and illegal addition of an extra floor to the building in 2016, despite the original plan only including nine floors.
Shockingly, the building lacked a ground report, static calculation, or static project, further compounding the negligence surrounding its construction.
As part of the ongoing investigation, five individuals, including managers and project personnel of Isias Hotel, have been placed under arrest.
The suspects will face charges of “intentional murder” as they bear responsibility for the avoidable tragedy that unfolded within the premises of Isias Hotel.
The revelations from the expert report have sparked outrage and underscore the need for stricter regulations, oversight, and accountability in the construction industry to prevent further loss of life due to negligence.
