Disparities in Net Wages: Hungary’s Lowest-Paid Jobs
The latest data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office paints a clear picture of income inequality within the country. In the first quarter of 2024, Budapest emerges as the city with the highest average monthly salary, exceeding HUF 500,000 (EUR 1,284.23). This figure is significantly higher than the average earnings in the lowest-earning counties, where the monthly salary is nearly HUF 200,000 (EUR 513.69) lower.
A recent report by Pénzcentrum analyzing data from the Central Statistical Office for the first three months of 2024 reveals some positive changes compared to 2023. The average net monthly salary in all counties of Hungary has reached HUF 300,000 (EUR 770.54). However, regional disparities persist, with Budapest boasting an average salary of HUF 503,108 (EUR 1,292.21), while many other areas struggle to reach even HUF 300,000.
County averages show significant discrepancies, with only Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Fejér, and Komárom-Esztergom Counties exceeding the national average. On the other end, counties like Somogy and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg lag behind with lower average salaries.
When it comes to industry-based earnings, intellectual labor in sectors like electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply in Pest County stands out as the highest earner, with an average net wage of HUF 851,490 (EUR 2,187.01). Conversely, the lowest-paid jobs in most counties are found in the human health and social work sector, with Borsod County having the lowest average pay in the country.
Overall, the data highlights the stark differences in wages across different regions and industries in Hungary. While some areas and sectors boast high salaries, others struggle to provide decent income levels for their workers. Addressing these disparities will be crucial in ensuring a more equitable distribution of wealth and opportunities within the country.
