Diverse Programs Planned for National Holiday
Numerous events are being organized in the capital city to commemorate the March 15 national holiday. Alongside the official state ceremonies and celebrations, the National Museum and the Parliament are offering free programs for the public to enjoy.
The state events kicked off on the evening of March 14 with the awarding of the Kossuth and Széchenyi Prizes. Additionally, promotions to the rank of generals were conferred at the Sándor Palace by President Tamás Sulyok, the Minister of Defense, and the Chief of the General Staff.

On March 15, the official programs commenced with a military salute and flag-raising in front of Parliament at 9 a.m. Following this, a procession of hussars marched to the National Museum, where Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delivered a speech at the commemorative ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m.
Throughout the day, various museums and the Parliament building are open to the public free of charge. The National Museum is also hosting family-friendly activities for children and film screenings from 2 p.m. As the day transitions into evening, iconic buildings across the capital will be illuminated with light exhibitions reflecting the theme of the national holiday. For those seeking a nature escape, a 20-kilometer daytime performance hike will take place in Buda along the Children’s Railway track.
Due to the festivities, certain public transport services will be rerouted, and closures can be expected around the event venues. The lower quay of Pest is closed to all but cyclists, scooters, and pedestrians between Margaret Bridge and Elisabeth Bridge for the first time this year.
It is important to note that trains and long-distance buses will operate according to Sunday and public holiday schedules. Most shopping malls and supermarkets will remain closed on March 15, with options for shopping available at 24/7 stores, petrol stations, convenience stores, tobacconists, and newsagents.
On this day, Hungarians commemorate the outbreak of the 1848-1849 Revolution and War of Independence, marking a significant moment in the country’s history. The events of 1848 ultimately contributed to the modernizing of Hungary and the rejection of the feudal system. The day also signifies the commencement of a war of liberation against the Habsburg Empire, culminating in the establishment of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1867.
