DMM refutes claim of RTÜK giving Halk TV a mimic penalty
The Directorate of Communications’ Disinformation Combat Center (DMM) recently clarified that reports claiming “RTÜK gave Halk TV a facial expression penalty” are false. The DMM addressed the issue in response to misinformation circulating in some press outlets.
According to the statement released by the DMM, the penalty imposed on Halk TV was not related to facial expressions but rather stemmed from remarks made by Cem Toker during a program featuring Nationalist Movement Party Leader Devlet Bahçeli on September 5, 2024. Toker’s comments were deemed accusatory and humiliating, violating Bahçeli’s personal rights.
The Radio and Television Supreme Council imposed a 3 percent administrative fine on Halk TV for breaching the provision outlined in Article 8 of Law No. 6112. This article emphasizes the importance of upholding human dignity, respecting privacy, and refraining from derogatory or slanderous remarks in broadcast content.
The DMM reiterated the importance of not succumbing to misleading claims aimed at manipulating public opinion.
