Dombra’s Harmonies Echo Across Kilimanjaro

Dombra player Alibek Kaiyrbek Conquers Mount Kilimanjaro with Soulful Sounds
ASTANA – Alibek Kaiyrbek, a talented dombra player, has once again amazed the world with his musical prowess, this time by performing Kurmangazy’s legendary composition “Adai” at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Towering at 5,895 meters above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro provided a breathtaking backdrop for Kaiyrbek’s soulful melodies.
Last year, Kaiyrbek brought the enchanting sounds of the dombra to Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest point in the Caucasus. His journey to Kilimanjaro spanned approximately seven days, allowing his body to acclimate to the high altitude and prepare for the challenging performance ahead.
In an interview with The Astana Times, Kaiyrbek shared his unforgettable experience on Kilimanjaro, praising the unique nature and vibrant people of Africa, especially the guides, porters, and carriers who supported him along the way. Despite the difficulties of tuning the dombra in strong winds, Kaiyrbek’s music resonated powerfully and emotionally, carrying the spirit of Kazakhstan to new heights.
Kaiyrbek’s project goes beyond conquering peaks; he also gives lectures and concerts at base camps, introducing people to the rich history of the dombra and inspiring them to explore Kazakh culture. His ultimate goal is to conquer Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America, with acclimatization climbs on other significant mountains.
To make his dream a reality, Kaiyrbek is seeking support as these expeditions require substantial financial resources. However, he firmly believes that sharing the story of Kazakhstan with the world through the sounds of the dombra is a journey worth undertaking. Stay tuned for more updates on Alibek Kaiyrbek’s musical adventures as he continues to conquer new heights and promote Kazakhstan beyond its borders.
