Double Earthquakes Hit Malatya: Magnitudes 5.2 and 4.7
Two earthquakes hit Malatya, Turkey with magnitudes of 5.2 and 4.7. The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reported that the first earthquake occurred at 17.46 in the Battalgazi district of Malatya. The second quake struck at 17.49. Both were felt in the surrounding provinces, but no adverse events were reported. The Vice President, Cevdet Yılmaz, wished for the safety of citizens affected by the earthquakes.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Ali Yerlikaya, announced that all relevant institutions were conducting field scanning activities after the earthquakes. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca stated that ambulance teams were assigned to scan the region and offered his best wishes to those affected. The Malatya Governor, Ersin Yazıcı, called on citizens to stay away from heavily damaged buildings.
There was also responsiveness from other officials. Governor Osman Varol of Adıyaman reported the earthquake was felt in the area and asked people to stay away from heavily damaged buildings. The Mayor of Malatya, Selahattin Gürkan, expressed hope that nothing negative would happen and that there have been no reports of destruction. The earthquakes were also felt in Kahramanmaraş. Citizens in Afşin and Elbistan took to the streets after the quake. Mayor Hayrettin Güngör of Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality said there were no negative reports at the time.
Overall, the earthquakes resulted in no loss of life, but officials are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions. Experts are reminding citizens to exercise caution, particularly around damaged buildings, in the wake of the quakes.
