Hungarian Fencing Team Wins Silver Medal at Sabre World Cup
The Hungarian women’s fencing team achieved a remarkable feat by winning a silver medal at the Sabre World Cup in Plovdiv, Serbia. The team, comprising two-time world team champion Sugár Battai, Liza Pusztai, Luca Szűcs, and Anna Spiesz, put up an impressive performance throughout the competition.
Starting with a convincing 45-27 victory over Hong Kong, the Hungarian team continued their winning streak by defeating the Polish and French teams with scores of 45-28 and 45-37, respectively. In the final, they faced off against the Japanese team in a tightly contested match.
Despite leading 40-35 before the ninth match, the Hungarian team was unable to maintain their advantage as Japanese individual world champion Misaki Emura staged a comeback, ultimately securing a narrow 45-44 victory for Japan.
Coach Etele Ravasz expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their consistency and confidence throughout the competition. He emphasized the importance of learning from the experience to further improve in future competitions.
Meanwhile, Hungarian epée fencer Gergely Siklósi also showcased his talent by winning a silver medal at the Doha Epée Grand Prix in Qatar. Siklósi, a former Olympic champion and world championship winner, displayed exceptional skills throughout the tournament, reaching the final where he faced Belgian fencer Neisser Loyola.
Despite a valiant effort, Siklósi fell short in the final, with Loyola securing a 15-11 victory to claim the gold medal. Nevertheless, Siklósi’s performance was commendable, reaffirming his status as one of Hungary’s top fencers.
Overall, it was a successful outing for the Hungarian fencing team, with both the women’s team and Siklósi bringing home medals from their respective competitions. The team’s achievements reflect their dedication and skill in the sport, setting a positive tone for future competitions.
