Drama in Hungary: Birth Rate Hits 20-Year Low

The latest data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reveals a significant decrease in the number of births in June compared to the previous year. According to the preliminary figures, there was a 17 percent drop in the number of newborns, while deaths also saw a decline of 5.9 percent during the same period.

In addition, the number of marriages registered a decrease of 14 percent, with only 4,946 couples getting married in June. The month saw 6,040 children being born and 8,863 deaths occurring.

The natural population loss for June stood at 2,823 people, higher than the figure recorded in June 2023. Over the period from July 2023 to June 2024, a total of 81,166 children were born, marking an 8.2 percent decrease from the previous year. The number of deaths during the same timeframe was 125,452, indicating a 4.8 percent reduction.

The statistics show that there were 8.0 live births and 13.1 deaths per thousand inhabitants in the first half of the year.

The data highlights the ongoing demographic changes in the country, reflecting a trend of declining birth rates and mortality rates.
