Driver Faces 8 Years in Prison for Causing Serious Injury in Road Rage Incident

The Kuşadası Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has accepted the indictment regarding the incident in which Ümit Yatçı was injured with a waist thrust by amateur wrestler Muhammad M. on July 16 last year. According to the indictment, Aydın Forensic Medicine Branch Directorate’s report stated that the fractures on Yatçı’s body could not be repaired with simple medical intervention and that he was seriously injured.
The incident occurred during an argument that broke out in traffic, where Muhammad M. reportedly punched Yatçı in the stomach, grabbed him by the waist, and injured him by hitting him face down on the ground in a way that is called “küne” in wrestling.
The indictment concludes that the suspect committed a crime against the complainant and was confirmed by camera footage, witness statements, and the forensic medical report. As a result, a prison sentence of 2 to 6 years is being requested for Muhammad M. for deliberately injuring a person in a way that would cause a bone fracture in his body and endanger his life, and a prison sentence of 3 months to 2 years for the crime of insult.
Furthermore, Ümit Yatçı’s lawyer, Ali Cenk Çapak, claimed that the defendant’s action against his client was “lethal” because it was done on a concrete floor. He argued that this action constitutes the crime of ‘deliberate attempt to murder’, not the crime of ‘qualified intentional wounding’, and stated that the file should be sent to the high criminal court.
The incident, which took place on July 16, 2022, resulted in Yatçı being seriously injured and Muhammad M. being taken into custody. Yatçı was discharged from Aydın State Hospital after a total of 11 days of treatment, including 4 days in the intensive care unit. The moment of the fight was also captured with mobile phone cameras.
The case will proceed to court, and the decision will determine the legal consequences for Muhammad M. in relation to the incident.
