Minibus Driver Detained for Tying Horse to Vehicle and Running After It
In a shocking incident in Eskişehir’s Odunpazarı district, a minibus driver was caught tying a horse to the back of his vehicle and running after it. The incident was captured on video by a driver in traffic who later shared it on social media.
Upon the circulation of the video on social media, the Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation and detained the minibus driver on charges of animal cruelty. The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office referred to the Animal Protection Law, which stipulates that anyone who violates the prohibition against torturing or cruelly treating a pet or animal can be sentenced to imprisonment for six months to three years.
The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office stated in a press release, “The investigation procedures for the crime of Cruelty to Animals have been initiated, and a detention decision has been made for the driver. We would like to inform the public regarding this matter.”
The Eskişehir Police Department’s Animal Situation Monitoring (HAYDİ) teams took immediate action following the arrest decision. They examined security cameras and identified the minibus’s license plate. The driver, identified as Murat Y., voluntarily surrendered to the Kurtuluş Police Station. After undergoing a health check, Murat Y. was taken into custody and later transferred to the courthouse by the HAYDİ teams, with his hands in handcuffs.
Murat Y., who denies the accusation of animal cruelty, made a statement to the journalists at the courthouse entrance. He said, “God sees everything. Will there ever be cruelty to animals up there? How will we be held accountable on the other side?” The investigation is currently ongoing.
