Drought: A Double-Edged Sword

Optimism in the agricultural sector is on the rise as preparations for investment tenders are underway. However, the outlook for farmers will depend on the duration of the current drought, according to the Chief Executive Officer of MBH Bank’s Agriculture and Food Industry Division.

The MBH AgrarTrend Index, which analyzes the Agri-Food Business of MBH Bank on a quarterly basis, has been hovering close to equilibrium for over a year, as reported by World Economy. By the end of 2024, the index stood at 33.7 points, just below the target balance of 35 points.

This index measures changes in the sector’s performance and market participants’ expectations on a 48-point scale. A score of 33.7 points indicates an improvement in the situation of agri-food operators, suggesting positive developments such as enhanced food production and a stabilized agricultural sector, as per official statements from MBH Bank.

Despite the ongoing drought, producers remain undeterred, particularly in crop production. The outlook has improved as investment tenders are being prepared, with award letters for smaller tenders in the food and livestock sectors set to be distributed soon.

The agricultural sector is poised to benefit from a substantial program totaling around 3,000 billion forints (€7.5 billion), making it one of the largest economic sectors in terms of investment.

While optimism in livestock farming has tapered, crop production is resilient amidst water shortages and rising grain prices. Sunflowers, in particular, have emerged as a profitable option due to their drought-tolerant nature.

Field crop expectations have improved, with sunflowers replacing corn in certain areas. Export of field crops has surged, providing farmers with income and allowing for increased investment in inputs.

However, challenges remain, notably in the pig sector, where oversupply in the German market threatens to destabilize the industry. Poultry producers are grappling with bird flu outbreaks, while waterfowl breeders face tough times.

On the consumer front, fruit and vegetable prices have dropped in the market, although industrial vegetable producers face stiff competition from Chinese imports. Global political factors, such as trade policies and relations between major economies, continue to influence agricultural markets.

Despite the negative impact of tariffs, international agricultural trade is expected to expand this year. Increased efficiency and emphasis on quality will be crucial in navigating market dynamics.

Overall, investment tenders are seen as a positive development, supporting value creation and quality in the agricultural sector. While challenges persist, there is optimism for growth and resilience in the face of current uncertainties.
