Dubai to Ban Disposable Bags Starting June 1

Starting from June 1st, a new ban on all types of single-use plastic bags will be enforced in Dubai. This includes both plastic and paper bags, with the aim of reducing plastic waste and promoting the use of reusable fabric bags. Dubai Municipality has urged residents and visitors to make the switch to reusable bags and be part of this positive change.

The ban also extends to biodegradable bags that leave behind harmful microplastics. However, there are some exceptions to the ban, such as packaging for essential items like bread, vegetables, meat, fish, and chicken, as well as bin liners, laundry bags, and packaging for electronic devices and online purchases.

Those who continue to use disposable bags will face a fine of Dh200, with the penalty increasing for repeat violations. Looking ahead, the use of cocktail sticks, cups, and plastic cotton swabs will be prohibited starting from January 1, 2025. From January 1, 2026, a ban on the sale and use of plastic food containers, tableware, and drink cups and lids will also be implemented.

This initiative is part of Dubai’s efforts to reduce plastic pollution and protect the environment for future generations. By taking small steps like using reusable bags and reducing single-use plastic items, individuals can make a big difference in creating a more sustainable and eco-friendly city.
