Earthquake Strikes Istanbul: Latest Updates on Earthquake Activity.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) Central Base in Istanbul’s Silivri district has released new statements regarding the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the Marmara Sea.

According to AFAD, aftershocks are expected to continue after the main shock, leading to the possibility of earthquakes up to a certain size. The earthquake, which occurred at 12:49, had a magnitude of 6.2 and took place on the segment of the North Anatolian Fault Zone passing through the Middle Marmara. It occurred at a depth of approximately 7 km and lasted about 13 seconds. The earthquake was felt in provinces within a 300 km radius of the epicenter.

Following the main shock, a total of 184 aftershocks have been recorded, with 7 of them measuring 4 or higher. These aftershocks are expected to continue in the coming days, mainly focusing on a line towards the east.

The AFAD Earthquake Science Board has gathered to evaluate the earthquake, noting that the earthquake had low acceleration values and indicated a right-handed breaking mechanism in line with the fault’s refraction mechanism.

The Ministry of Environmental Urbanization and Climate Change is conducting on-site examinations to determine building damage, as the number of calls to 112 has exceeded 10 thousand, with citizens reporting structures of concern.

AFAD urges citizens to stay away from risky buildings, report suspicious structures to the 112 call center, and remain calm and cautious in the face of aftershocks. It is advised to avoid spreading unconfirmed information from social media and other channels.

Our thoughts are with Istanbul and the citizens affected by the earthquake, and AFAD will continue to provide updates to the public on further developments.
