Hungarian Road-Building Industry Reaches Historic Moment with New M44 Motorway Section Opening
The Hungarian road-building industry has reached a historic moment, as the westernmost section of the M44 motorway was opened in the Kecskemét area on 15 April. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán attended the event, marking the completion of a significant infrastructure project.
The new 32.3-kilometre section between Szentkirály and Kecskemét was built by Hódút Építő Kft., a company within the Danube Group. This project is part of the larger effort to improve transportation infrastructure in Hungary, including the completion of the Storm Search Expressway Link from Motraway to Békéscsaba.
In total, 127 kilometres of four-lane roads have been completed between Békéscsaba and the M5 motorway over the past 8.5 years. The completion of the Kecskemét-Szentkirály section marks the final step in this series of projects.
The construction phase of the project involved multiple companies working together to meet the ambitious timeline set by the Ministry of Construction and Transport. The successful completion of this project demonstrates the industry’s capability to deliver major infrastructure improvements in Hungary.
The M44 motorway includes a unique bridge crossing the Tisza river, adding to the significance of this infrastructure project. Additionally, plans for future motorway expansions, including widening the M1, M3, and M7 motorways to three lanes, as well as the construction of the M8 motorway, are in place to further improve travel across Hungary.
The project has not been without challenges, but the dedication of over 1,500 workers and substantial funding from domestic sources has ensured its success. With the completion of the Kecskemét-Szentkirály section, motorists will enjoy improved connectivity and accessibility in the region.
