EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso Updates President Tokayev on Green Transition Program

President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Odile Renaud-Basso recently met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to discuss the progress of the green transition program. The EBRD plans to invest two billion euros (US$2.2 billion) in this initiative.

The meeting took place on April 3 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where Renaud-Basso informed Tokayev about the EBRD’s commitment to financing projects that promote sustainable development and environmental protection. In 2024 alone, the EBRD financed 25 projects in Kazakhstan, amounting to $935 million.

Tokayev expressed his gratitude to the EBRD for its support in various areas, including the development of Kazakhstan’s banking sector. The bank has played a key role in modernizing legislation, promoting fintech, and implementing global standards in the country.

During an interview with The Astana Times YouTube channel, Beata Javorcik, the bank’s chief economist, shared insights from EBRD’s latest Regional Economic Prospects report. According to Javorcik, economic growth in Central Asia is projected to reach 5.7% in 2025 before slightly easing to 5.2% in 2026.

Overall, the EBRD’s collaboration with Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries highlights the importance of sustainable development and green investments in driving economic growth and environmental protection in the region.
