Eco-Project Award Winning High School Students Accepted into Foreign Universities.
Etham Can Kara, a 12th-grade student from Samsun, Turkey, has become a global sensation after winning first place in international competitions with his innovative and eco-friendly projects. Kara’s Bioplastic Bag Project, which can be recycled as a softener in washing machines after use, grabbed the first prize in Turkey in the Samsung Future Inventors competition.
In addition, his project that utilizes “Pseudomonas Luteola” bacteria to destroy heavy metals in wastewater and enables the wastewater to be used in agriculture, won first place in the prestigious 2021 Mostratec World Science Olympics.
Kara noted that he always aimed to improve himself with projects in different fields from his early years, and he believes that giving oneself the opportunity to learn in different areas can be the key to discovering oneself and finding the right area.
In Kara’s own words, “A person who does not produce cannot be happy in any way. Therefore, I will try to produce something in the future and carry out studies to find new things. I want to carry out these studies in my country as much as possible. Because both my family and the Turkish society brought me to this point. This is how I want to repay my debt to the Turkish society in the future.”
Kara’s achievements have not gone unnoticed, as he has been accepted into the Computer Science departments of 14 universities from England, Canada, America, and the Netherlands. He has selected the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto to further his studies, with King’s College London as another potential option.
The young inventor’s incredible innovations exemplify the importance of eco-friendly practices, and his success will undoubtedly inspire many others to follow in his footsteps.
