Education on 4 Aegean Islands Suspended for Another Week due to Seismic Activity
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced the closure of schools on Santorini, Yamurgi, Niyoz, and Anafiya islands due to seismic activity. The four islands have been declared a state of emergency, leading to the suspension of education for safety reasons.
Experts have assessed the situation and determined that there have been over 18,400 earthquakes in the region since January 26th. The recent seismic activity in Santorini and Yamurgi Islands has been attributed to submarine faults and tectonic movements.
Despite the seismic activity, buildings in the region have shown good resistance to earthquakes. However, experts are advising against crowded indoor gatherings and cautioning citizens to avoid dilapidated structures.
In light of the ongoing seismic activity, residents are advised to avoid certain areas on Santorini Island and take precautions against potential landslides. Delegations will reconvene on February 19 to further evaluate the situation.
