Kyrenia Antique Harbor Project: Updates and Changes
The Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, Department of Antiquities and Museums have released a statement regarding the ongoing Kyrenia Antique Harbor project.
According to the statement, the tender for the project was awarded on September 24, 2022, and work commenced after the contract was signed in December. It has been highlighted that the project area is classified as a 1st degree protection area. Therefore, all excavation and restoration activities, including works on building facades, are being carried out under the supervision of the technical personnel.
Senior managers’ opinions were sought during the project’s planning phase, prior to the tender process. The technical personnel involved in the project were also informed about the various stages. It has been clarified that the project, prepared by the Department of Antiquities and Museums, did not require submission to the Supreme Council of Monuments.
The statement acknowledged media reports and social media discussions about the project since December 2022. The news coverage emphasized the discovery of train tracks during the excavation in February. Despite mandatory adjustments made to the project based on these findings, no institution, organization, or non-governmental organization registered any reaction.
The statement revealed that 90 percent of the project’s infrastructure has been completed and the flooring process has commenced. However, due to concerns expressed on social media, the Supreme Council of Monuments concluded that the selected flooring was unsuitable.
Consequently, the High Council of Monuments decided on an alternative flooring option for the project. The Department of Antiquities and Museums promptly prepared a new project in accordance with this decision and submitted it to the board. On June 26, 2023, the board approved the revised project, making it ready for implementation. The necessary Planning approval and the approval of the High Council of Monuments were obtained.
At present, the concrete previously poured will be removed from the area in compliance with the decision. The area will then be prepared for the laying of compacted sand, concrete parquet flooring, as well as pebbles on building facades and the quay side, as specified in the revised project.
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, Department of Antiquities and Museums remain committed to carrying out the Kyrenia Antique Harbor project with the utmost respect for the region’s historical significance and careful consideration for expert opinions on preservation and restoration.
The completion of this project will not only enhance the cultural heritage of Kyrenia but will also provide locals and visitors alike with a stunning attraction to appreciate and learn from.
