AK Party Wins Majority of Seats in Elazig Election

The AK Party has won the majority of seats in Elazig, with a total of three deputies elected in the recent election. Out of the 430,745 voters in the city, 378,389 voters cast their votes in 1631 ballot boxes, resulting in a turnout rate of 86.05 percent. Of these votes, 364,825 were counted as valid.

According to unofficial results from the Provincial Election Board, the AK Party won three deputies with 40.3 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, CHP received 20.67 percent of the votes and one deputy, and the MHP garnered 13.5 percent of the votes and one deputy. As a result, Prof. Dr. Erol Keleş, Ejder Açıkkapı, and Mahmut Rıdvan Nazırlı became AK Party MPs, while Gürsel Erol from CHP and Semih Işıkver from MHP also won seats.

Erol Keleş, one of the new deputies from the AK Party, was born in Elazig in 1970. After completing his undergraduate education at Fırat University Faculty of Medicine, he began his doctorate career in 1993. He received the title of professor in 2012 and was appointed as the Chief Physician of Elazig Fethi Sekin City Hospital in 2020, before resigning to run for office.

Ejder Açıkkapı, another newly elected AK Party MP, was born in Elazig in 1968. After studying at Fırat University and Anadolu University, he completed his master’s degree at Fırat University, Department of Republican History. He has previously served as the Vice President of Promotion and Media in the AK Party Elazig Provincial Organization and was elected as the AK Party Elazig Deputy in the 26th term.

Mahmut Rıdvan Nazırlı, who became an AK Party MP in Elazig, completed his undergraduate education at Selçuk University and has worked in a private company. He also served as the provincial manager of his party and the Head of Social Affairs of the Headquarters Youth Branch.

Gürsel Erol, who won a seat for the CHP, has been involved in politics for many years. He served as the General Chairman of Tunceli Education Culture Foundation and the chairman of Alevi Non-Governmental Organizations between 1995-2014. He became a deputy from Tunceli from CHP in the 2015 Turkey general elections and then from Elazig in the 2018 elections.

Semih Işıkver, the new MHP MP, is a civil engineer.

Overall, the AK Party has emerged as the clear winner in Elazig, winning three out of the five seats available.
