Embracing Luck: Kazakh Traditions in Everyday Life
Growing up in a Russian-speaking environment with deeply rooted Kazakh traditions has shaped my perception of the world. Superstitions and beliefs in the unseen were a part of everyday life, blending seamlessly with an awareness of forces beyond our visible realm.
One of my earliest memories of this was the practice of sharing “yrys” — a Kazakh word meaning prosperity or abundance. Returning borrowed kitchenware with sweets or treats inside was a way of sharing our good fortune, ensuring that luck continued to flow our way. This tradition, known as “yrymdau,” involves reading omens, recognizing signs, and giving small tokens for good luck.
Names also hold significance in this belief system, with the choice of a name shaping one’s path in life. Acts of kindness, such as donating to charity or assisting those in need during financial difficulties, are seen as ways to align oneself with fortune and goodwill.
The practice of yrymdau extends beyond individuals to include communal celebrations where sharing food from a feast or asking for an item from a fortunate person is believed to invite luck. However, it is not just about receiving — effort and preparation are crucial in welcoming and harnessing fortune.
Yrymdau reflects Kazakhs’ deep respect for nature and the unseen forces that guide their paths. It is an act of optimism, nurturing the belief that luck, happiness, and abundance can be cultivated and encouraged. By paying attention to signs and traditional practices, Kazakhs navigate life’s unpredictability with resilience and hope.
In “Qazaq Yrymdary” (Kazakh Beliefs), authors Akhmetzhan Kaibaruly and Bolat Bopaiuly highlight the enduring nature of Kazakh superstitions and customs, rooted in centuries of nomadic life. Practical wisdom, such as observing signs from animals or ensuring even placement of household items, reflects a reverence for the natural flow of life.
Through yrymdau, Kazakhs embrace hope, resilience, and the belief that small gestures and mindful actions can shape their destinies. It is not merely about superstition but a way of fostering optimism and balance in an ever-changing world.
