Embracing Winter Wonderland: Ready for Snowfall and Frosty Winds
Hungary is preparing for a week of wintry weather, with snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures expected across the country. As Christmas draws near, some areas may even enjoy a white Christmas, with snow accumulation likely in the southern and western regions, as reported by Index.
On Monday, overcast skies will prevail, with significant precipitation anticipated in western Transdanubia. The Mecsek region may see snowfall exceeding 15–20 centimeters, while Baranya and Tolna counties could experience 5–10 centimeters of sticky snow. Lower elevations may have a snow depth of up to three centimeters. The Transdanubian region will also face gusty northerly winds, with speeds reaching up to 70 km/h in some areas, leading to snowdrifts, especially in the Mecsek hills. Daytime temperatures are forecasted to range between 1°C and 4°C.
HungaroMet has issued a yellow warning for snowfall in Baranya and Tolna counties, where up to five centimeters of snow is expected within 12 hours.
Christmas Eve will bring snow that may transition to rain in some areas. Cloudy skies will persist on Tuesday, with snowfall predicted in eastern Hungary, later changing to sleet and rain. Melting snow is likely in low-lying regions, while a thin layer of fresh snow could accumulate in certain areas. Overnight temperatures will hover around freezing, with daytime highs ranging from 1°C to 6°C.
On Wednesday, the first day of Christmas, skies will gradually clear from the north and northeast, bringing sunny intervals to most regions. Light snow or sleet may occur in the morning, particularly in southern Transdanubia, but precipitation is expected to diminish throughout the day. Overnight temperatures will range from -2°C to 3°C, rising to 2°C–7°C during the day.
The second day of Christmas and onwards will see generally clearer skies with occasional clouds. Winds will remain gusty but are expected to subside gradually. Daytime temperatures will vary from 2°C to 8°C, while overnight lows may drop to -4°C or even colder in snow-covered, less windy areas.
