Camel Breeding Industry Thriving in Karagandy Region, Kazakhstan
In a unique development, camels are now being bred for the first time in the Bukhar-Zhyrau district of the Karagandy Region in Kazakhstan. This exotic industry is being pioneered by the residents of Kyzylzhar village, who have successfully established their own camel farm. The local residents are now producing shubat, a popular fermented camel milk beverage.
Traditionally, camel breeding in Kazakhstan has been concentrated in the southern and western regions. However, the Karagandy Region, located in the central part of the country, is now emerging as a potential hub for camel farming. The region’s first camel breeder, 22-year-old Kazybek Abatov, recognized the market potential and decided to invest in camel farming.
Camels are known for their hardiness and cost-effectiveness, making them an attractive option for farmers. Additionally, camel products such as meat, milk, and fur are always in high demand. To establish his camel farm, Kazybek Abatov participated in a loan program and invested 47 million tenge ($104,766). With 58 camels imported from Kyzylorda, he is currently able to milk up to 60 liters of milk per day.
Speaking about his decision to breed camels, Kazybek highlighted the numerous benefits associated with camel products. “Camel meat and milk are beneficial for health, its fur is the warmest and has healing properties. For example, a belt made of camel wool can alleviate radiculitis pain,” he said.
The success of the camel breeding industry in Kyzylzhar village has attracted attention from local authorities. Tolegen Irgebayev, the Akim (mayor) of the Rostov district, expressed his support for the farmers and pledged to provide necessary assistance. Plans are in place to further develop the industry by processing camel’s milk and packaging it for sale.
The farm in Kyzylzhar village is home to both Kazakh Bactrian and single-humped dromedary camels, which produce milk with a high fat content of 4 percent or more. Kazybek Abatov aims to expand his farm, increase milk production, and secure a grant by participating in a competition for startup entrepreneurs.
The establishment of the camel breeding industry in the Bukhar-Zhyrau district is not only a significant achievement for the local community but also showcases the potential for diversifying Kazakhstan’s agricultural sector. As the demand for camel products continues to rise, the camel farming industry in Karagandy Region is expected to grow and contribute to the economic development of the area.
