Empowering Women in Kazakhstan’s Aviation Sector
The changing face of aviation in Kazakhstan reflects shifting gender norms and opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated professions. With more than 9,500 women working in the aviation sector, including pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers, and technical professionals, the country is making strides in promoting gender equality and diversity in the industry.
The Academy of Civil Aviation in Almaty has seen a rise in female students, with the percentage of female applicants increasing from 19% to 25% in recent years. Women are also making strides in leadership positions, with Saltanat Tompiyeva appointed as chair of the Civil Aviation Committee and other women holding key leadership roles within the aviation administration.
Female aviation professionals like Diana Ibrayeva, a Boeing 737 captain for SCAT Airlines, are breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in aviation. Ibrayeva shared her journey to becoming a pilot, emphasizing the importance of focusing on personal achievements and not comparing oneself to others in the industry.
In 2023, Kazakhstan saw its first all-female flight crew operate multiple flights in a single day, challenging stereotypes and showcasing the capabilities of women in aviation.
