Enhancing Romanian Language Instruction for Hungarian Students in Transylvania

The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) has reported significant improvements in the teaching of the Romanian language in Hungarian-language classes. Katalin Mihályfalvi, the executive vice-president of RMDSZ, stated that Hungarian students’ results in Romanian language and literature exams have steadily improved since 2018. In 2018, 53% of Hungarian students achieved a grade above the pass mark, while in 2022, the number increased to almost 60%.
Mihályfalvi also mentioned the implementation of new, innovative academic programs and methods, emphasizing that change does not happen immediately and that it takes a generation to see its effectiveness. As part of the new Romanian education law, funding programs to help Hungarian students learn Romanian are allowed, but the methodology still needs to be developed. Additionally, the Education Department of RMDSZ is planning Romanian camps and exchange programs to assist Hungarian students.
In dispersed areas, there has been a significant reduction in the number of places where “simultaneous education” takes place, which involves grouping pupils from different grades together in a single class. This is partly due to the creation of dispersed-student homes and various support programs, such as school bus services.
Furthermore, Ms. Mihályfalvi highlighted the improvements in resolving the issue of school buses, with many places receiving support from the Hungarian government or through the Rákóczi Association’s program. This has led to a significant enhancement in transportation for students.
Overall, the RMDSZ is actively working to support Hungarian students in Romania and ensure that they have access to quality education and resources. With continued efforts and funding, the teaching and learning of the Romanian language in Hungarian-language classes are expected to further improve in the coming years.
