Environmental Protection Spending Soars by 37.2% in Last Year
Environmental protection expenses in Kazakhstan reached a significant milestone in 2023, totaling 610 billion tenge (US$1.3 billion). This marked a 37.2% increase from the previous year, as reported by the Bureau of National Statistics.
The Akmola Region led the way in environmental expenditures, investing 127.7 billion tenge (US$268.6 million), which accounted for 20.9% of the total spending. Following closely behind were the Atyrau, Pavlodar, and Aktobe Regions. On the other hand, the Zhetisu Region reported the lowest costs for environmental protection activities at 1.5 billion tenge (US$3.1 million).
A significant portion of these expenses, approximately 97.2%, were attributed to industrial enterprises. The top areas of investment included energy-saving technology and enhancing energy efficiency, which made up 33.2% of the total expenses. Waste management followed closely behind at 21.6%, with air protection and addressing climate change concerns accounting for 20% of the overall spending.
The increase in environmental protection expenditures reflects Kazakhstan’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development. With a focus on leveraging renewable energy sources and enhancing waste management practices, the country is taking significant steps towards a greener and more sustainable future.
