President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to make his first foreign visit to the island of Cyprus to emphasize the importance of the national cause and the Turkish state’s commitment to the region. The visit will showcase to the world that Cyprus is a common national cause. Discussions are expected to focus on the TRNC’s sovereign status, natural gas and oil deposits, exploration and drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean. Erdogan and TRNC President Ersin Tatar will discuss the recent developments on the island with its regional and global dimensions. The two leaders are expected to hold a joint press conference, which will be carefully watched and interpreted by the international media. The Turkish side’s new policy envisages a solution in a confederal structure based on cooperation between two equally sovereign states. Erdogan’s visit also offers clues on Turkey’s foreign policy in the upcoming century. The first stop on his visit will be the Nicosia Atatürk Monument, where a wreath will be laid, followed by a state ceremony at the TRNC presidential campus.
