Erenköy: A Symbol of Heroism, Patriotism, and Resistance

Erhan Arıklı, the Minister of Public Works and Transportation, recently commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Erenköy Resistance, a historic event that marked a turning point in the struggle for independence and freedom of the Turkish Cypriot people.
In his message, Arıklı emphasized the significance of the resistance, stating that it was a testament to the unwavering determination of the Turkish Cypriot youth to protect their homeland. He highlighted the courage and sacrifice of the students from Turkey and England who left their education to join the resistance in Erenköy, where they fought against Greek attacks under extremely harsh conditions for two years.
“The Glorious Erenköy Resistance is a symbol of the Turkish Cypriot people’s unwavering commitment to freedom and sovereignty,” Arıklı stated. He praised the faith and determination of the people of Erenköy and the mujahideen who bravely stood up against the Greek forces, despite being outnumbered and outgunned.
Arıklı went on to express his pride in the Turkish Cypriot people’s resilience and their unyielding loyalty to their Motherland Turkey. He credited the Erenköy Resistance as the guiding light that ultimately led to the establishment of the independent and sovereign Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
As the nation remembers the martyrs of the resistance and honors the veterans who fought for their freedom, Arıklı called for the continuation of this honorable struggle. He expressed his belief that the unity and solidarity displayed during the Erenköy Resistance will serve as an inspiration for future generations, urging everyone to take pride in saying, “I am a Turk.”
The legacy of the Erenköy Resistance lives on as a powerful symbol of love for the homeland and the indomitable spirit of resistance. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Turkish Cypriot people in their quest for independence and freedom, and stands as a beacon of hope for all who aspire to uphold these values.
