Erhürman advocates for connecting the island’s energy grid with Turkey
The Chairman of the main opposition party in Cyprus, Tufan Erhürman, has spoken out about the ongoing discussions regarding energy transmission on the island. Erhürman emphasized the importance of connecting the island, including Turkey, for feasibility and to minimize political, legal, and geopolitical risks.
He pointed out that significant discussions are taking place in Southern Cyprus regarding the “Great Sea Interconnector” project. Erhürman expressed concerns about the interconnection of Israel, Greece, and Cyprus in terms of electricity, as well as the connection of Cyprus to the EU grand system, highlighting the potential risks involved.
Erhürman mentioned the discussions surrounding the interconnection of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), noting the political and legal obstacles that may arise through ENTSO-E. He stressed that the most reasonable and rational approach, in terms of feasibility and risks, is for the island to be interconnected, including Turkey.
Recently, Erhürman shared his views with EU officials who are involved in providing financial support for the Great Sea Interconnector project. He emphasized the importance of working together, finding solutions, and achieving peace on the island through a collaborative approach.
Overall, Erhürman’s statements underscore the need for cooperation and strategic decision-making in the energy sector to ensure a sustainable and stable energy supply for Cyprus.
