Escaped to Izmir: The Unfortunate Tale of a House in Flames
The devastating fire that broke out in the Yamanlar Neighborhood of the Karşıyaka district on August 15 has left many families and businesses in ruins. The fire, which raged for three days before being contained on August 18, has caused extensive damage to homes and workplaces in the area.
In the Onur Neighborhood of the Bayraklı district, residents are still coming to terms with the destruction caused by the flames. Some are seen sifting through the remains of their burnt houses, while others gather to share tea in front of their charred remains.
Among the affected residents are Selim Kaya and Resul Sirkeci, whose homes were completely destroyed in the fire. Selim Kaya, who had previously lost his childhood home to fire twice, was devastated to see his current residence in ruins. He expressed his desperation for support as he attempts to rebuild his life once again.
Resul Sirkeci, on the other hand, recalls the horror of watching his house go up in flames within minutes. Despite his efforts to extinguish the fire, he was unable to save anything from his 34-year-old residence. Both men are now left with nothing but ashes and memories of their former lives.
The fire, which started in a forested area and quickly spread to residential neighborhoods, resulted in the destruction of 16 houses, evacuation of 87 houses, and displacement of 45 businesses. Three neighborhoods were also forced to evacuate as the flames threatened to engulf their homes.
As residents begin the arduous task of rebuilding their lives, the community is coming together to offer support and assistance to those in need. The government has also promised to provide new homes to those affected by the fire, offering hope and relief in the midst of this devastating tragedy.
